Senior Legal Counsel

As a key member of the Avanti Finance Group legal team, the Senior Legal Counsel will have primary responsibility for supporting our Australian operations, while also providing legal support to our New Zealand business. This role involves close collaboration with the Australian Leadership Team and the wider legal function to deliver commercially focused, strategic legal advice. The Senior Legal Counsel will engage with stakeholders across the business to help achieve Avanti Finance’s strategic objectives and ensure risk is managed effectively

As a Senior Legal Council, you can expect to: 

• Provide strategic, practical legal advice aligned with Avanti Finance’s corporate objectives.
• Identify, assess, and mitigate legal risks relating to commercial transactions, regulatory compliance, and day-to-day operations.
• Streamline and simplify legal processes and documentation to improve clarity, accessibility, and turnaround times.
• Contribute to positive experiences for customers and introducers by ensuring legal touchpoints are efficient and user-friendly.
• Proactively seek and respond to stakeholder feedback to drive continuous improvement in service delivery.
• Provide timely, practical, and commercially focused legal advice.
• Build strong, trusted relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including senior leadership, regulators, and external counsel.
• Work collaboratively with cross-functional teams to support strategic initiatives and integrate legal considerations into business decisions.
• Represent the legal function on key projects, ensuring the business is supported with clear, solution-focused guidance.

We are looking for candidates who have:

• Mid to senior-level qualified legal professional with an Australian practising certificate.
• Proven experience in commercial law, ideally gained within a corporate or regulatory in-house environment.
• Strong understanding of Australian legal and regulatory frameworks; exposure to New Zealand law is advantageous.
• Excellent communication skills with the ability to build and maintain strong stakeholder relationships.
• Commercially astute, proactive, and solution-oriented, with the ability to work independently while contributing effectively to a collaborative team.
• In-depth knowledge of Australian consumer credit law and distribution arrangements, with the ability to clearly explain legal implications to a range of stakeholders.
• Solid experience reviewing and negotiating commercial contracts and marketing materials, with a good understanding of corporate governance and privacy compliance requirements.
• Familiarity with debt collection practices and related legal considerations, as well as working knowledge of key Australian regulatory bodies and the associated filings, returns, and compliance obligations.
