Senior Automation Test Engineer

Avanti Finance is growing – fast

We’re on a mission to become the best specialist lending company in New Zealand and Australia, and we’re looking for ambitious, driven people to help get us there.

We’ve got bold goals and a clear vision for the future. That means exciting opportunities for those ready to champion new ideas, challenge the status quo, and grow alongside us.

If you’re hungry to make an impact, thrive in a fast-paced environment, and love turning ideas into action – you’ll feel right at home here.

The role:

We're looking for yet another member to join our growing team as we're going through a large growth phase at Avanti!

As a Senior Automation Test Engineer, you’ll be the quality engineering anchor across Avanti’s core lending and financial technology systems. You’ll architect and evolve our Playwright/TypeScript automation framework, set the technical direction for the relevant project, and be the person developers and product teams turn to when quality and testability need to be solved

This isn’t a follow the process role - you’ll make real decisions about tooling, coverage strategy, and how automation fits into our delivery pipeline. You’ll work hands on every day while also influencing how the broader team thinks about quality.

What you’ll do:

  • Architect, own, and continuously improve our Playwright/TypeScript automation framework
  • Design and build robust end-to-end, API, and integration test suites across web applications and backend services
  • Define and enforce automation standards, patterns, and best practices across the team
  • Integrate and maintain automated tests within Azure DevOps CI/CD pipelines, including self-hosted build agents
  • Lead shift-left quality initiatives — embedding testability requirements early in design and development
  • Drive meaningful regression and smoke test coverage across multiple product workstreams simultaneously
  • Conduct test impact analysis and risk-based testing decisions for complex releases
  • Mentor and upskill developers and junior QA engineers on automation best practices
  • Evaluate, recommend, and implement new testing tools, frameworks, and AI-assisted approaches
  • Own test strategy documentation, coverage reporting, and quality metrics dashboards
  • Support security and integration testing across APIs and third-party platforms
What you’ll bring:

Must-have technical skills:

  • 6+ years in software testing with at least 3–4 years in a senior automation engineering capacity
  • Expert-level, production experience with Playwright combined with JavaScript or TypeScript — this is the core of the role
  • Strong JavaScript/TypeScript proficiency - interfaces, generics, async/await patterns, modular code design
  • Deep experience with the Page Object Model (POM) and other scalable framework design patterns
  • Hands-on API testing - REST and/or GraphQL using tools such as Postman, Supertest, or similar
  • Experience building and maintaining automation within Azure DevOps or GitHub Actions CI/CD pipelines
  • Solid understanding of Git - branching strategies, pull request workflows, code reviews
  • Experience with test management tools - Xray for Jira, TestRail, or equivalent
  • Strong defect lifecycle management and root cause analysis skills
  • Working knowledge of BDD/Gherkin and feature-file-driven automation
  • Familiarity with environment configuration - .env management, test data strategies, and secrets handling
  • Exposure to performance or load testing tools (k6, JMeter, or similar)
Highly regarded:
  • Experience in fintech, banking, lending, or regulated technology environments
  • Security testing awareness - OWASP Top 10, input validation, file upload vulnerabilities, injection flaws
  • Experience testing third-party or vendor-integrated platforms (loan origination systems, CRMs, or similar)
  • Familiarity with Docker or containerised test environments
  • Experience with AI-assisted testing tools (GitHub Copilot, Playwright AI integrations, or similar)
  • ISTQB Advanced Level certification or equivalent
