Risk Manager - Modelling & Analytics

Avanti Finance is growing – fast

We’re on a mission to become the best specialist lending company in New Zealand and Australia, and we’re looking for ambitious, driven people to help get us there.

We’ve got bold goals and a clear vision for the future. That means exciting opportunities for those ready to champion new ideas, challenge the status quo, and grow alongside us.

If you’re hungry to make an impact, thrive in a fast-paced environment, and love turning ideas into action – you’ll feel right at home here.

The role

As part of our Credit Risk team within the wider Risk & Operations function, you’ll partner closely with the Head of Auto Decisioning to uplift and transform the way we do Credit at Avanti. You’ll be the organisation’s subject‑matter expert for IFRS 9 Expected Credit Loss (ECL) across all lending portfolios.

You will:

  • Lead the end‑to‑end IFRS 9 ECL process - from data readiness and modelling through governance, documentation and quarterly provisioning - ensuring results are accurate, explainable, auditable, and decision‑useful.
  • Collaborate across Finance, Risk and Pricing to align assumptions, ensure outcomes are understood and agreed, and embed ECL insights in planning and decision‑making.
  • Present model outputs and recommendations to executive committees, translating complexity into clear narratives and actions.
  • Build and maintain a model‑risk governance framework, uplifting documentation standards and model lifecycle controls.
  • Develop monitoring dashboards for underwriting models (e.g., approval/conversion, vintage loss, tier mix, KS/GINI, cut‑off effectiveness) and use these to drive portfolio performance.
  • Assist with ongoing development and build of Credit Scorecards across the group.

What you’ll bring

  • Expertise in IFRS 9 ECL: staging, PD/LGD/EAD estimation, portfolio segmentation, forward‑looking scenarios and judgement overlays.
  • 3+ years building and maintaining credit risk models, with hands‑on ownership across development, validation and monitoring.
  • Data skills: ability to extract, clean and transform data from multiple sources using SQL and/or R/Python.
  • Excellent communication: you can translate complex model results into decision‑ready insights for executives and committees
  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Economics, Statistics, Data Science or a related discipline

Why join Avanti

  • Brand-new office in Wynyard Quarter (early 2026) with stunning waterfront views.
  • Free on-site gym and Pilates studio - wellbeing built into your workday.
  • Flexible working options to balance life and work.
  • Volunteer Day and extra annual leave after two years.
  • KiwiSaver matching: Avanti matches 4% when you contribute 4% or more.
