As Legal Counsel, you’ll provide legal advice and strategic guidance across the business on a broad range of legal matters. This is a true all‑rounder role, ideal for someone who enjoys rolling up their sleeves, taking ownership, and finding pragmatic solutions in a fast‑moving financial services environment. Broad financial services experience is highly valued. With Avanti’s funding strategy and growth in the investment space, funds or funds management experience would be an advantage, but is not essential. Above all, we’re looking for someone who is business‑minded, solutions‑focused, and shows initiative.
The role
Deliver practical, business‑focused legal advice that influences real decisions across the Avanti Group Advise on a wide range of legislative and regulatory requirements, as well as corporate and commercial matters, work on strategic, business‑critical projects, including:
- Product development and new market opportunities
- Digital transformation and technology initiatives
- Regulatory change projects
- Support growth and enable the business by:
- Drafting, reviewing, improving, and negotiating a broad range of agreements, including commercial, lending, funding, technology, procurement, and third‑party arrangements
- Helping design and continuously improve legal processes, templates, and playbooks that support both growth and compliance
- Supporting Avanti’s funding and investment strategy, working closely with Treasury and Finance on funding structures, investor documentation, and related legal considerations
- Provide governance and company secretarial support, including:
- Supporting the Company Secretary function
- Assisting with governance matters and board and committee processes
- Managing general corporate housekeepin
You will bring:
You’re a capable, confident lawyer who enjoys breadth, responsibility, and being close to the business.
- A Bachelor of Laws and a current NZ Practising Certificate
- Ideally 3–6 years’ PQE, gained in‑house and/or in a NZ law firm, with experience in relevant areas such as banking, financial services, corporate or commercial law

- Broad legal capability and the confidence to work across diverse and evolving matters
- Strong commercial acumen, with the ability to balance technical legal requirements with pragmatic business outcomes
- A collaborative mindset and the ability to influence and partner effectively with stakeholders at all levels
- Clear, concise communication skills, with the ability to translate complex legal issues into plain English
